Recent British scientific research is based on a study of 22,000 people who were followed over five years. All participants put on weight over that time.

However, meat eaters who changed to a vegetarian diet gained the least weight.

Prof Tim Keys, who led this study for the University of Oxford and Cancer Research UK, obtained interesting results that are contrary to popular beliefs. His study is published in the Journal of Obesity.

He said: “Contrary to current popular views that a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein keeps weight down, we found that the lowest weight gain came in people with high intake of carbohydrates and low intake of protein.?
The study involved meat eaters, fish eaters, vegetarians and vegans. On average the entire human sample population gained 2 kilos over the five years and none of them were overweight.

The less consumption of animal products, the less weight was gained, leaving the vegans on top, with vegetarians runners-up.

And the bit about exercising then?

Well, it’s part of a holistic picture it seems. The study also found that those who became more physically active gained less weight than those who did not. No surprises there.

So, not good news for vegan couch potatoes and a ray of hope for raging carnivores?

Well? the simple message is, whatever you eat, physical activity is part of the weight loss, and health-deal.

Yes, this study is part of a larger investigation by EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition), comparing half a million people’s diets in 10 countries to learn how diet is linked to cancer. Results from EPIC’s investigation show that diet is a leading cause of some cancers.

Take diabetes, often a condition associated with inadequate diet and being over-weight. The EPIC study has revealed that diabetics carry three times the normal risk of developing colo-rectal cancer.

After a meal high in glycemic index (ranking of foods according to how fast their sugars are released into the bloodstream), blood-sugar levels rise higher and rapidly. The insulin needed to fill all that sugar into muscles and fat cells also weaken the activity of glucagon, a hormone that signals the body to burn stored fuel when blood-sugar levels fall below a certain point. Glucose level drops so low leaving the body starved for energy. The brain and intestine then send out hunger signals. New cravings are created requiring more carb intake. We, then overeat that leads to more fat, rise in blood insulin level, more hunger, and more weight gain and the cycle goes on.

On the contrary, adhering to a low carb diet puts an end to this cycle. Reduced carbohydrates would mean decreased insulin level, increased glucagon level, weight loss, improved triglycerides (fats carried in the blood which are necessary but when excessive cause coronary damage), decrease in LDL (bad cholesterol), increase in HDL (good cholesterol).

The bottom line ?Give refined or processed carbohydrates which cause rapid changes in blood sugar, trigger hunger, thereby encouraging overeating that ultimately leads to obesity smaller spots on your plate. Anyway, nobody ever died from skipping potatoes, pasta, rice and white bread.

Let’s say the food label says the product has 2 grams of sugar and 14 grams of sugar alcohols. Does that mean it’s safe? It is NOT safe because when the sugar alcohols act just like sugars, in essence, you are consuming 16 grams of “sugar-action?because you have to ADD the two together since they react in the body the same way. Some “diet?foods claim to be low in sugar ?TRUE ?but then they contain 22 grams of sugar alcohols. This is okay for non-bariatric patients, but a sure “dumping in the making?for us!

What exactly is “Sugar?

Chemically, sugars are carbohydrates. As the body digests food, carbohydrates (except fiber) break down into sugars. We can find sugars in a variety of forms. Sugars just aren’t used to sweeten food: they are also used as natural preservatives and thickeners. Sugars are added to foods during processing and preparation. The body cannot tell the difference between “natural?sugars and artificial sugars because they are the same in regards to chemical breakdowns.

Watch out for these sugars in disguise! Some are obvious while others are tricky:

Fruits are good for our system, if taken in moderation. But too much of the “natural?sugars can also cause an ill effect.
